Why Does My Oven Need A Water Filter?

Running a bakery and using baking machinery is costly, but the last thing you want to do is push aside properly maintaining your equipment. Some regular costs can save you thousands in the long run, especially if it’s something you either don’t even know about or lost track of.

And a water filter is a small piece of equipment that protects some very expensive bakery equipment parts.

A combi oven water filter or steam oven water filter, or whatever bakery machinery you have that has a water filter, such as a retarder prover, removes unwanted minerals, chemicals and sediment from the water before it enters your oven. That means no excess chlorine, dirt, calcium or magnesium heading straight into your machine.

When water turns into steam inside your oven, those minerals stay behind and build up. A proper water filter for combi oven systems protects critical components like steam boxes, boilers and heating elements.

What Happens Without a Water Filter?

Without a bakery water filter, scale starts building up inside your oven, which is a big problem.

When water becomes steam, it leaves minerals behind. Over time, this forms limescale on steam boxes, pipes and heating elements. Just a small amount of scale can increase energy use significantly and reduce performance.

We’ve seen real examples (as you can see below) where a steam box in a deck oven completely rusted and eroded away because the oven water filter was never replaced. This resulted in a very costly repair, and if you have multiple decks or ovens, that cost multiplies quickly.

Poor water quality doesn’t just damage industrial bakery equipment, it also affects steam quality in the chamber. That means uneven baking, poor crust development and inconsistent results.

So, while skipping a replacement oven water filter might save money today, it can cost thousands tomorrow.

How Water Quality Impacts Your
Baking Results?

Whether you’re running wholesale bakery equipment or small artisan ovens, better water means better baking.

Using filtered water for bread making improves yeast performance and dough hydration. For example, chlorine and other contaminants in unfiltered water can interfere with fermentation and affect how well your dough rises.

As a baker, that can mean dense bread, inconsistent crumb structure, or poor texture.

Steam quality also plays a huge role in crust development. If your steam oven water filter isn’t doing its job, scale buildup can reduce steam output and affect colour and finish. In a retarder prover, it could interrupt fermentation, interfering with rising.

How Often Should You Replace Your Water Filter?

Now to the important information.

Most manufacturers now recommend a bakery water filter replacement every 6–12 months, depending on your location and water quality.

Due to declining water quality across Australia, updated guidelines suggest:

If you operate a rack oven, deck oven, convection oven, combi oven or retarder prover, it’s time to check when your last replacement bakery water filter was installed.

Introducing Vanrooy's Water Filter
Replacement Program

With all of the above in mind, this is why Vanrooy is introducing our 2026 Water Filter Replacement Program.

As a bakery machinery supplier, it’s our duty to keep you informed so that you can schedule in bakery oven water filter changes so you avoid major breakdowns and costly repairs.

If you’re unsure about your water quality, you can even send us a sample from an unfiltered tap at your premises for testing. In some cases, a reverse osmosis system may be required for full protection of your industrial bakery equipment.

We have a few water filter options currently in stock and available for immediate purchase.

The Water Filter Cartridge gives you clean, better-tasting water while protecting your ovens, retarder provers and coffee machines. Using carbon block filtration, it reduces chlorine taste and odour, removes dirt down to 5 microns and helps prevent limescale buildup with built-in scale inhibitors, which means less damage to your equipment over time.

It’s rated for up to 10,000 gallons, works purely on water pressure (no power needed) and has a fully enclosed design so changes are quick and hygienic. Certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 42, it keeps the good minerals in while filtering out the bad.

The x5+ pack is the smart choice for busy bakeries and cafés that want backups ready to go. You get the same chlorine reduction, 5-micron filtration and limescale protection, just in bulk, saving you money and downtime stress.

Each cartridge is rated to 10,000 gallons, requires no electricity and should be replaced every 6–12 months or when water pressure drops. Simple, reliable protection for your combi ovens, deck ovens, rack ovens, convection ovens, retarder provers and other
steam equipment.

The Water Filter Head is the heavy-duty mounting system that keeps everything secure. Built for commercial kitchens, it features corrosion-resistant hardware and 3/8″ fittings to handle strong flow rates for bakery equipment like deck, rack and combi ovens, coffee machines and ice machines.

Its compact design fits neatly under benches or inside cabinets and it mounts vertically for quick, easy cartridge changes.

Water Filter FAQs

How often should I replace my oven water filter?

Most oven water filters should be replaced every 6–12 months, but it really depends on how much you use your oven and how hard your water is. Busy bakeries or areas with hard water may need more frequent changes. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to check sooner rather than later.

What happens if I don't change my oven water filter?

Old filters stop doing their job properly. That can lead to scale build-up inside your oven and pipes that produce steam, such as in retarder provers, reduced steam performance, higher energy use and costly repairs down the track. A small filter change now can prevent a big service bill later.

How can I find out the quality of my bakery's water?

The best way is to get your water professionally tested. This tells you things like hardness levels, mineral content and any impurities that could affect your deck, rack, convection or combi ovens or provers. Poor water quality can cause scale build-up, maintenance issues and baking inconsistent results. As mentioned above, send us a sample of the unfiltered tap water in your bakery for us to test for you.
