Mockmill Cleaning Guide

Mockmill Cleaning Guide: How to Clean, De-Glaze & Maintain Your Grain Mill (100/200 & Pro)

Here’s the short version: the best way to clean your Mockmill is to run about ½–1 cup of dry rice through it on the coarse setting, then slowly sweep the lever to fine and back to coarse. Do this until the flour that comes out looks clean and doesn’t smell like your last batch.

If your stones are “gummed up” (we’ll get to that), you can de-glaze them with a little trick. And one golden rule: never use water inside your Mockmill.

What Do You Need To Clean Your Mockmill?

  • A handful of white rice or wheat (nothing oily)
  • A bowl to catch the flour
  • A soft brush (for stubborn bits)
  • A damp cloth (just for the outside)
  • A butter knife (use the non-knife side)

That’s it! No fancy tools needed.

How to Do a Quick Clean of Your Mockmill (Between Everyday Use)

1. Run rice on coarse

Turn the lever to coarse (10), turn your mill on, and pour in about ½–1 cup of rice.

2. Sweep fine → coarse

While it’s running, slowly move the lever towards fine, then back to coarse. This helps the stones “wipe” each other clean.

3. Repeat if needed

If you’ve just milled something strong (like rye or spices), run another small batch until the flour looks and smells neutral.

4. Wipe the outside

Turn off, unplug, and give the outside a light wipe with a damp cloth. Never wipe inside.

When Your Stones Get “Glazed” (Deep Clean)

How to tell

If your Mockmill is grinding slower, sounds strained, or the flour is coming out sticky, your stones are probably glazed.

How to fix it

  • Try running rice on extra-coarse (if your model allows it).
  • Still stuck? Unplug, open up the mill, and lightly scratch the glaze with the opposite side of a blunt butter knife to give the rice something to grip. Then run another batch of rice.
  • After that, you should be back to smooth milling.

Opening the Mockmill (100/200 Models)

Don’t worry, it’s simpler than it sounds.

  1. Unplug first (always!).
  2. Remove the lever and hopper (they just lift off).
  3. Unscrew the round chamber cap, then lift the top stone.
  4. Use a brush to clear residue (still, no water).
  5. Put it all back together and make sure the stones just “tick” when the lever is set to 1.

Foods to Avoid (and How to Remove Smells)

Skip these

  • Nuts
  • Oily seeds (flax, sesame, poppy, sunflower)
  • Coffee beans
  • Popped Corn

They’re too oily and will coat the stones.

Removing spice smells

Milled cumin lingering? Just run a quick rice clean straight after. Bonus: you can even keep the spice-scented rice for cooking.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mockmill?

You don’t need to deep clean every time you use your Mockmill. Here’s a good rule of thumb:

  • Quick clean: Every time you switch from one flour/spice to another.
  • Deep clean: Only when you notice it struggling or glazing.
  • Storage: Run a quick rice clean before putting your mill away for a while.

Troubleshooting Your Mockmill

  • It’s not grinding fine enough → Do a de-glaze clean. Then re-set your lever so the stones tick at “1.”
  • It still smells like spices → Run more rice through. If needed, open and brush.
  • Settings seem off → Re-index the lever so “1” means the stones are just touching.

FAQs: Mockmill Cleaning

Can I wash the stones with water?
Nope. Keep water away from the inside. A dry clean is all it needs.

What rice is best?
Any plain white rice. ½–1 cup is plenty.

Does cleaning remove gluten/spice traces completely?
It’ll remove most. For strict allergy needs, run several passes or use a separate mill.

Will I void my warranty if I open it?
Not at all—Mockmill explains how to safely open it in the manual. Just don’t take anything apart beyond what they recommend.
